Check on the website Dynamite.com for "Rescue" homeopathic solutions. I just heard a speach from a holistic vet on Rescue 911 and some other compounds. Sounded great and many people in the audience at the lecture said it worked well for their dogs' fear situations.
Hope this helps.

DAP might work, it isn't as affective as diazapam, but it should help your lab to feel more calm. All it does is to release calming pheramones into the area. It usually works better with something like seperation problems. It is a good product and does what the label says, but it won't make your dog enjoy fireworks. It may allow you to lower the dose of diazepam given. Is in the side effects that you are worried about, or is it the fact that is makes him or her unable to undergo natural anti-anxiety habits? Side effects are mininmal if not given frequently. As for her normal habits the correct dose should allow her to not process the scarey sounds as well so the will be calmer. It also acts as a depressant so she can't hurt herself. Can you put her in a quieter room like a basement with a radio? That may take some of the edge off, but not always. I like DAP personally, i think the thought behind it is good; but it isn't the be all end all.
Whatever you do avoid ACP (Acepromizine). They are often used to calm the dog down, but can knock them right out if you are not careful, and they render the dog incapable of doing anything about what is going on, so they still panic but can't do anything about it, which frightens the hell out of them even more.
I close all doors windows and curtains have the main room lights on and either the radio or television. Homeopathic rescue remedies are excellent and much kinder to your dog they are also very effective try
