Given that there are billions and billions and billions of insects, will they ever realise that if they just stopped eating each other and got together and formed a union, or a narmy or summat instead, they could take over the world?

They haven't yet reached world domination Jacob, but have you ever seen documentaries showing vast armies of Soldier Ants and Locusts on the move, devouring everything in their path? Scary stuff!!
But they have already taken over the world. They have been around for hundreds of millions of years, compared with two million for humans; they swarm everyhere ruthlessly eating crops etc.; the flies have saved us from being drowned in our own poo; and the mosquitoes have killed a thousand times as many people as Hitler and Stalin combined.
I once read there are a million ants for every human on earth. There's no way you could take out a million ants. Unless you had an enormous kettle, that is. JFK Bookmakers offers 1/4 Ants, 5/2 Humans. Dead heat rules apply.

for an idea of what this would be like, download or read the lyrics to 'Insects Rule' by Brendan Benson
