According to the local authority pest controller who drove a rat out of my loft - if you are living in the countryside, there are rats all around you and every hedgerow has them. They also particularly like nice warm compost bins to live in. Cats can drive them away, as does poison, of course, but the truth is that if you have a rural area, there will be rats.
