i have a rabbit and she usually likes spending the night in the backyard; there has been a street cat lingering around my house lately: can this cat hurt my rabbit in any way?

Feral cats regularly kill and consume rabbits, especially younger, smaller ones. There's no reason to expect that any cat, given the chance, would not kill a rabbit...
My cat has brought home the odd rabbit. Unless the rabbit is much larger than the cat, I would build it a pen or keep it in.
That's why cats often eat 'Rabbit' flavoured cat food.
My cat brought home a rabbit as big as herself, it was awful!!
If ur rabbit isn't in an enclosure the cat could probably seriously hurt it. a rabbit is quite capable of defending itself thats why it has huge teeth but i would still say that a cat would win so get a hutch or keep him in, a cat will take a chance at anything. I've seen my cat even bringing home grass snakes and bats.
