Sheep or Shoop?

If the plural is a gaggle of geese and a flock of sheep, and the singular is goose, why is it not Shoop and not sheep? please someone explain this to me!!

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.The plural of 'sheep' used to be 'sk�pu', but it lost the final vowel in Anglo-Saxon days. In Northumbria for a lot longer, 'scipo' was the plural form, so they retained the final sound there. In the end, though, they gave in too and now we all speak of 'sheep' as both singular and plural...just as with 'deer' , 'fish' etc.
