Some people hang a blanket over it so it is more like a cave. Most dogs love having a place all to themselves, I suppose its a bit like kids building a tent in a living room.
Make sure it is large enough for the dog to lay stretched out, stand up and turn around.
It does make them feel more secure and relaxed. Don't leave the dog in it for more than three or four (at the limit)hours though, and don't shut the dog in it as a punishment, otherwise the feeling of security goes.
As said previously leave the door open when you are home and the dog will probably go in there of its own accord.
