SOMETHING visits my bedroom window in the small hours, sniffs very loudly three times, then leaves. I was wondering- what is it and how can I get it to stop. Is it a fox?

Just a guess, but I think it might be a hedgehog. Sit and wait with a torch. Doris ;-)

whatever it is it puts the s**ts up the cat

Out of curiosity incitus, is your bedroom on the ground floor - I hope so ;-)

Snuffling accompanied by grunting would make your visitor a Hedgehog - unless you're out in the sticks then it could be a Badger.

It is odds-on that it's an ordinary hedgehog ( or a bold hedgehog with a ladder up to the upstairs window; no bat or bird would sound like that outside it). It is named "hedgepig" with good reason; it rootles and snuffles about, like a pig, in hedgerows and in leaf litter; dead leaves are likely to be around your window now. It is looking for slugs, beetles and such in there.
Why has nobody said that it is the most obvious answer.......your local friendly neighbourhood perv has taken a shine to you and is getting his jollies looking in at night.....Wear big frumpy undies and a nora batty nightcoat and this will send him on his way.

i have a bassement flat, so window is at ground level. sadly it isnt a pervert. m(mrsinci and i are tolerant folk, we might even enjoy that) as he would have to climb through a large mahonia bush. hodgeheg sounds likely- but why would this terrify the distressingly smallanimalivorous bailey (cat of a thousand teeth)
Look at it from Bailey's point (no pun intended) of view, even if you were famous for being the 'cat of a thousand teeth' wouldn't you be a tiny bit jittery being confronted by a 'hog with a thousand prickles' :D

BTW Hedgehogs should be in hibernation now unless the mild weather has upset their body clocks.

Could it be a suitor for your cat?
