Best way to identify an Insect online?

I found a horrible-looking insect under my carpet yesterday, and i want to know what it is!! Have done a google search for a site but didnt get anything relevant back. Anyone have any sugestions? Im in the UK. Thanks.

Thanks for all your help, Stuart from the Natural History Museum has given me a definitive answer now.
It is a larvae from a mealworm beetle, and is usually caused by birds nesting in the roof, attic or chimney. Found mine beside my boarded up fireplace so end of mystery!
