The Natural History Museum have an identification service.
They have some information sheets which you could download - you could also get in touch and email them some photos.

Thanks for all your help, Stuart from the Natural History Museum has given me a definitive answer now.

It is a larvae from a mealworm beetle, and is usually caused by birds nesting in the roof, attic or chimney. Found mine beside my boarded up fireplace so end of mystery!

Thanks again Big Gill, your answer gave me a direct lead to the solution!
