mice!

ARRRGH last night i was in the bathroom and then suddenly a mouse(?) or (dear god i hope not a rat) shot out across the floor and out under the bathroom door.
i was petrified! and ive never even been scared of mice before really! now im really scared just to walk round my house in case i see it again!
is it normal to have a mouse/mice in your house? what do i do!!
yes im a wimp.

We had this problem a few years ago and yes it will be several mice. I bought an humane trap which catches them alive then I took them in the car for a ride and set up a little colony in a local wood. If you release close to your home they will be back.

Yes - humane traps baited with chocolate work best from my experience but as yvonnem says they need to be released away from the house. Perhaps you could try to identify where they are "living" in the house and then see if you can block their access. Problem is they are clever little devils and will usually find a way in if they are determined enough. Do you have a cat? Mine bring live mice in which I then have to catch and release - could this have happened to you?

If the mouse makes you really scared , when you go into a room make a bit of noise before you enter. That gives the mouse time to hide and hopefully you won't see it. Apart from getting traps you need to look for the place where the mouse is getting in . It could be a very small hole.

We have had mice in our office we have a huge gap under of office door so it just comes and gos when it wants and climbs in our bins to eat food we leave from lunch so I would say

1) dont leave food around keep it in closed tubs and the bin lid closed and not accessible to the mouse.

2) block holes in walls and attach draft excluders to bottom of doors if there is a huge gap

3) buy humaine traps I bought two though and they never worked so buy different types of humaine traps if possible ..put them down where the mice have been seen bait them with chocolate or peanut butter and leave the traps next to walls in sheltered/hidden areas...ie. the mouse has to feel confident about entering the trap if you placed the trap in the middle of the room it would be too scared to go inside.

about the 'making noise before entering a room' i quite like this idea because at least then i won't see it, what about if i have loud music on would that scare it away?

If you have music on as loud as my sons have it and the horrid bang bang stuff they listen to , that would frighten anything away!!!
