Hi,
It is generally around four to five weeks of age, when they are already able to use a litter tray ( which they manage to learn to do before they work out how to feed themselves )
The best way to encourage them to start eating, if they don't work it out for themselves, is to put a little bit of soft food on to your finger tip, open the mouth, and gently place it inside, by wiping it on to the top of the roof of the mouth. Don't be surprised if it is spat straight out! This gives them the idea, and the taste, and you just keep on repeating this over a few days, until they start to eat it, although generally they will work it out for themselves. I tend to offer food from 4-5 weeks, or, if they are taking an interest in their Mum's food, then just ensure that what she is offered is also suitable for the kittens. I find raw turkey mince a really good thing to start them on.
I have been breeding pedigree cats for 18 years, so have found that out of the many tried and tested ways, this seems to work the best.
