Can snails survive after their shell has been broken? I have sometimes stood on one in the garden by mistake, with that sickening crunch - should I finish them off mercifully quickly or is there a chance they could survive?

Dont think they survive - I only cracked the shell of one slightly, so I picked it up and put it on one side, and it was dead the next day. sorry......!
Oh Sherlockian you murderer you! Think of those snails you've made orphans because you've stood on their mummy, I don't know how you can live with yourself- shame on you!

Mr Spudqueen still cringes when I mention the time he was cutting the hedge and a snail stuck its head out to see what was going on just as Mr Spudqueen went SNIP with the shears. One decapitated snail.
