Because they eat a huge amount of it. Rather than eating branches, they prefer to eat only the most nutritious part of plants. They spend more than half of the day eating and, beside sleeping, they don't really do much so don't exert the same energy as an active animal.
umm...most of the largest animals on the planet eat just that. The answer to why they are large and strong is to do with herd structure and defenses more then diet
agreed incit and wild. animals are the size for the amount of food available and the size of that food. Whales are their size due to the readily available amount of Krill (which are in swarms of billions). Where are Lions are the size so they are able to tackle and kill bisson etc. However they do not need to hunt everyday if they have fed well enough due to the energy in one animal. Herbivores eat constantly and are their size due to the amount of food, social "pack" etc

they are so big and tall because they have adapted to a life in the trees and reaching up for leaves and possible sometimes bannas. like use humans a gorillas body is full with different organs and most of all, all the different muscles so they can grap a hold on to a branch when there just hanging there for a incredably long time
