cats in the garden

this must have come up before, but I struggled to find anything.

has anyone had any success in deterring cats from using their garden as a litter tray.
next doors cats driving me up the wall at the moment.
I've 2 kids, so need to stop this, but want to do it without resorting to hurting the cat.
anyone used one of those sonic devices, or any other suggestions.

Hi munchie63. I agree, what a pain! I find it really irritating.

My dad bought one of those sonic scarers (apparently it makes a sound, but it doesn't seem to affect my dog, and you would think it would) to deter next door's cat. He said it worked reasonably well until "someone" disabled it. He gets mad because he keeps his cars really nice, and the neighbourhood cats have no respect for this!

I've been sprinkling dried garlic on the garden every few days, or after it rains, and it's worked so far. I bought two big jars of it from Lidl - only 49p each, so it's cheap too....!!

nothing really works. I have used oprange peels and other smelly stuff and it was all useless. the cats poohed right next to them. Think about it, cats live nj peoples kitchens which are full of ranges and other smelly stuff. It doesnt really bother them.

They love to drink off saucers. Leave a bit of stuff thyat you pout in your car in a little saucer in your back garden.

you will have saved 50 garden birds too.

I'll give the pepper etc a go.

I have actually tried a water pistol.
I swear the cat was smiling at me while it sat on the fence with me firing at it.

to be honest, I don't mind animals, but with 2 young kids, and a small garden, I can't leave the cat to carry on.

Incidentally, i get on well with my neighbours, but thinking about it, they had there whole garden paved and a huge summer house erected last year, so where do they expect the cats to go ?
especially when they put them outside all day.

This may sound daft but.....

If you live near a Zoo or Safari Park ask for some lion or any other big cat poo and put a small bit in a few areas of your garden.

No cats will come near.

It worked for us.

In your best "cat voice" ask them politely not to poo or wee in your garden please, and in return you won't poo or wee in theirs. Seems fair enough to me.

there is only one sure fire solution and it works a treat and your kids will love it. Get yourself a cat, better still get two cats, better still get two kittens - cuuuuuute. Cats are very territorial and poo on the edge or beyond their territorial boundry, so once your cats have established their own area normally your own garden then they will defend it from other cats and poo elsewhere.

Cats do not like water, try using a water filled plant sprayer if you can get near enough; alternatively a lawn sprinkler with a fine spray.

Also a few strategically placed prickly cuttings, such as holly or rose.

Pheasants are easy. They hate shiny things so string together some old CDs and hang them around the garden. It worked on my allottment!

Cats wont actually poo in their own garden they do it somewhere else. bad if u live on a street with lots of cats. u could get a cat of ur own n let it go in next doors garden :-)

As we go to Colchester Zoo several times a year, I might just ask about the Big Cat stuff.
I bet they do sell it, as it would make them a few quid for stuff they'd throw anyway.

This is going to sound really off the wall but my aunt swears that this works (although she does have a very tiny garden). Get a 2 litre plastic bottle, the sort that lemonade or coke comes in, remove the label and fill it with water. Leave it on it's side in the garden where the cat usually poos and it won't do it anymore....apparently. If you have a big garden I guess you would need to put more than one bottle down. It's not very attractive I know, but then nor is piles of cat poop.

It sounds daft to me but my aunt says it's always worked for her. It doesn't cost anything so it's got to be worth a try at least. I would be interested to know if it works for you as I've never had the need to try it myself, my dog sees any cats away!

Hi. I recently found some devices on this website www.primrose-london.co.uk/cat_repeller.php and i bought one for my dad as hes was alway complaining about cats in his garden driving him crazy. Ever since he installed it he has not had any problems with them and swears by it. He has recommend it to all his friends.
