I would say you have a choice depending on the amount of control you require. As with all things bit related you should use the softer options first and then progress to stronger options only if necessary.

Treat it as close as you can to a normal snaffle at first, attached the cheekpieces to the top (single) ring, and the reins to the main rings. The next stage if required, would be to attach the reins to the first hole down the shank (similar to a pelham shank). The strongest effect would be to attached the reins to the last (bottom hole) on the shank.

Using the holes in the shank increases poll pressure and pressure on the corners of the horses mouth and therefore also intensifies the mouth pressure.

I am wondering why you have bought a bit, when you do not even know how to affix it. Any decent saddlers would be able to advise you, please read the information in this link before using the bit.

My thoughts too, how good are your hands with such a severe piece of equipment? Have you tried a stronger noseband such as a Grakle which is a figure of eight and brings the horses head down without putting too much pressure on the head.

I do know the difference and thank you for your help. Every time i take this bridle apart i always forget which goes where, call it a senior moment. I have 2 bridles for riding summer and winter, and each time i take the wondergag off, i always think it looks wrong,so rather than wait to next winter cos ths is my winter bridle) thought i wld make it easier on myself lol). I use a french link in the summer for a change but if i find she has no breaks then i go bak to the wondergag and theoreticaly u shld use double reigns with this, but i just use singles on the ring nearest the bit, as i thinjk the other woujld b to severe. Many thanks again
