Colt fits the animal/pistol reference. No idea what the other part of the clue means tho !

Got it I think ! Colt 45 is a pistol. Let the 45 slip off ( ie a 45 disc) and you are left with colt, a four letter animal !!! Hurrah for me.

Who's a clever dicky then. I'd never have got the 45 bit.
