I am about to seperate my betta from my large tank into a tank of his own. His current tank has oxygen pumped into it. As they breathe from the surface of the water, is it necessary that I pump air into his new tank or is it better that he just takes it from the surface himself?
I will be putting a filter into the tank.
Thanks in advance.

No, you don't need to pump air into it.
As above.....Bettas are from a group of fish called anabantids (which also includes gouramies and paradise fish0. These fish have a special organ in their gills called a labyrinth which allows them to breathe atmospheric air.

This means the Bettas can live in very poorly oxygenated, stagnant waters such as paddy fields.

This obviously doesn't mean that water quality can be left to deteriorate !
Well, you learn something new everyday!!!!
Depends how big the tank is - you don't want to go putting an airstone in and creating lots of turbulence which will make the fish feel uneasy.
As mentionned above they are used to stagnant bodies of water and can get oxygen from the air.
