I have got a seven month old Westie, and i have been giving her James well beloved puppy food, but she dont go for it as much as Bakers, i want what is best for her, which one do you think is the best
Hi Jondel,
I have an 18 month old Westie and have tried her on practically everything.
Only thing she will eat is Bakers Small Dog Food.
My colleague at work also has a 12 month old Westie and like myself, her dog will only eat Bakers Small dog food. There is always plenty of water by her bowl, so not a problem there. I am sure there are other dog foods that people would recommend but my Misty will not eat any of them.
It isnt a case of which is best, it is what suits your dog and what she likes the most. However, with dried food, I would put a bit of water on it, irrelevant of whether there is plenty of water around.
Opinions differ, but James Wellbeloved is a much better quality food than Bakers, but Bakers is very popular because of the TV ads and it is readily available in supermarkets. We have recently had a discussion about this on one of my dog groups, and one behaviourist said about 75% of the dogs she gets with problems are fed on Bakers!
Personally I feed Eukanuba, and before anyone starts sending links to the PETA campaign against the IAMS company, don't bother, I've seen it so many times I can practically recite it.
I don't believe one food is any better than another just "more expensive". My 8 month old Jack Russell will only eat Bakers and is doing fine, she is very fit and healthy. Mind you she does suppliment her diet with the odd rabbit, rat or what ever else she catches!!!
Look at it this way are birdseye frozen peas and better for you than Tesco's own........probably not.
I have a gsd (9)and a border collie (5) both on bakers with no problems , Im having my new gsd on sunday and will be changing him on to bakers puppy food over the next few weeks I have had no problems at all with this product but every dog is different GypsyX
I fed my lab on Bakers and she looks great. I also put sliced raw carrot or broc in with the Bakers and twice a week put in a tin of sardines in tom sauce in. Water of course.
Hi I have two westies, one 8 and one 4 and both of them have fresh chicken, boiled rice and James wellbeloved white fish biscuits. They wolf this down every day. My 8 year old used to suffer with eczema but I than changed her diet to this and she's been eczema free for 6 years now! As soon as my 4 year old was about 12 weeks old I put her on this diet (but using the puppy version of the biscuits) and she's the fittest, healthiest dog I know.....mad as a hatter of course as most westies are!!!!
Keep an eye on puppy to make sure that she is not extra scratchy, The additives they put in bakers makes alot of westies sore, they seem ok at first but after six weeks when there body starts to itch (Allergic ) they get sores in there joints my westie is 7 months she is the same not intrested in JW... I have to add either a tin of sardines in tomato sauce or a tin of pilchards in tomato sauce, with burns and now she loves it.
Thanks for your reply,I know exactly what you mean about nibbling their jounts , I also understand they are prone to skin troubles, So are you saying you feed Burns dry food with some added sardines or pilchards, how often do you give the tin fish, not every day i wouldn't think,
I would say half a tin of pilchards or sardines once or twice a week. You could also give her a daily evening primrose oil capsule, or some of the products on the market specially formulated for skin. On the recommendation of a vet, I started using Yumega a few weeks ago, and it has really made a difference to my puppies itchy scurfy skin. http://www.lintbells.com/yumega/index.php
Yeah lilly has a snack of little sardines in tomato sauce around 10am, Then at around 4-5pm I MIx 3 Pilchards Large tin usually last about 3 days) with the recommended amount of Burns (Weight of lilly),
I give all my dogs it now they only need to here the tin opener and they all line up.
Lilly had a spell at the vets when she was 4 months. and that is what they fed her, Aparently its very good for there digestion system and the oils in the fish give her a really healthy coat
There is one draw back my daughter wont go any where near her as as she stinks of fish
Don't forget the manufacturers want to sell their food, so they put down more than most dogs actually need. Give her what she will eat in one go and then take it up, and give her fresh at the next meal time. She will soon get into the routine of eating it up in one go.
Jondel, we all have different opinions on what is the best complete food, I know Lankeela uses Eukanuba, but I have fed Hills for the last 16 years, my friend uses Royal Canin, James Wellboved and Burns are good foods also, its personal preference, what the dog likes, and what suits her.
You are absolutely right, as she have been on Royal Canin and she was scratching a lot, she didn't scratch on James Welbeloved but she wasn't keen on it, she likes the Bakers best, even more so when i put some Sardines in it.
