Spaying

I am having my year old Bedlington spayed soon. What is the average recovery time and and advice on what to do/not do with her.

I am sure she will be fine. she may be sleepy on the night you bring her home, you usually drop them off at the vets in the morning, and collect them late afternoon/early evening. She may want a light meal on the night, and if it is anything like one of mine was, she was back to normal the next day. The vets do advise you keep them quiet and no jumping etc, but that is sometimes easier said than done. If she has stiches that need removing, this will usually be 7 - 9 days later, but they sometimes use disposable ones, and she may just need to go for a check up. I know how you feel though, it wasnt a choice in my case, my young bitch had a pyo, she was only 9 months old and her first season, I wanted a litter from her, so I was distraught.

The only thing you really need to stop her doing is chewing and licking at her stitches, but then they may give you one of those plastic collars to stop her doing that.

Apart from that, I cant say anything that jules hasnt already said.

Try not to worry too much, she will be fine :)

I can only agree with everything the previous abers have said.
My Westie was done six weeks ago. The vet gave us three painkillers to give her, One a day.
She was sleepy when we fetched her from the Vet, late afternoon.
She was sore for a couple of days, had to be walked on a lead for a week and back for a check up after three days. The stitches disolved by themselves.
Hope your baby is fine. I am sure she will be.!

Sally - these people are right. Your baby'll soon be up and about. Dogs recover much quicker than humans undergoing similar operations. Watch her when she needs to go outside, give her light meals, don't let her bite at her stitches - and she'll be bounding round in no time!

Thank you all so much - funny how we can cope with anything in life, but when it comes to our dogs its a different matter!!

I know I am doing the right thing cos if she had puppies I would want to keep all of them!!

Dont worry it is a very common thing to have done.The best thing to do is just make her a comfy bed and keep her relaxed as she will be sleepy!!

Just wanted to give all you kind people an update. Pickles had her op yesterday and we collected her last night. She is very sleepy but has had some chicken this morning. I made her a bed in the lounge and slept on the sofa last night to check she was ok. She hates the plastic collar!! The scar is very neat and the vet has done inverted stitching so it has no visible stitches.

Poor Pickles the op was on her 1st birthday so she will have to wait for her presents - how soft am I!!
