After 16yrs of happiness the last thing you want is to remember your friend in pain. When I had my first GSD he lived to the ripe old age of 15 and as he got older I discussed the "D" question with Margaret the vet and I've always remember what she said, that anybody who truely loves their pet doesnt need telling when to let them go. I hope you dont have to face the decission to soon as nobody wants to loose a beloved friend but when the time comes let him go painlessly. It doesn't make it easier, but at least you only have memories of a happy friend
i am so sorry, but i wouldnt worry too much about the symptoms as you will know in your heart when it is time, and he will tell you as he will become uncomfortable and not display his usual behaviours.
Dont know if this would be of any interest to you

Have you spoken to your vet about it, and is he on any treatment?
I know that to avoid problems with anal glands you should give the dog more fibre in their diet, but dont know if that would help in your case. Your little dog has had a good life, and you will have treasured memories of him, and I am sure you wont let him suffer, and will know when the time is right. take care x
