Sleepy Hedgehog..in the Mediterranean
9 Answers
Hi,
I just discovered (a couple days ago)
a half dead baby (small maybe 4-6 weeks) hedgehog
covered in eggs and the fly. I washed it off with a little tea tree oil and water and I frontlined it so all the ticks are gone.It drank loads of water and gave I it dog food and it seemed active and fine. However after a serving of dry cat food and then escaping in the house last night it seems very groggy /wobbly and is sneezing a little from time to time. Is this because it's just been awake most of the night or could it still be very ill? Do they hibernate in the winter... even in the Mediterranean?
Please let me know A.S.A.P
Thanks!

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.not all species of hedgehog hibernate,it depends on temperature and abundance of food!you say the hedgehog is wobbling, they often suffer from wobbly hedgehog syndrome which is similiar to MS in humans.initially the hedgehog wobbles whenit tries to stand still, eventually loosing all muscle control, including control of its lungs(maybe causing the sneezing) and heart. i think it would be wise to take it to the vet to find out exactly what is wrong with it!iv just started a project on them and im jus remembering what ive already read.i maybe wrong!hope this helps!goodluck
Hi,
Thanks for the reply! I do hope youre, wrong as I am becoming terribly attatched to the critter! Anyway the wobblying has stopped and it has walked around a bit and eaten a little and drank a little but is definately tired as it keeps falling asleep. The poop yesterday was healthy ,a great big brown mound! But today its little bits of green slime! I read something about hiberantion (wanting to go into it ) but needing to discourage it? I was just trying to understand what the person meant when I lost the darn info! Do you know about that sort of stuff-hibernation, etc?
Thanks again for that info!

all it says is that hibernation depends on abundancy of food, temperature and species.well if its not wobbling anymore then thankfully i was wrong!maybe because after being starved and dehydrated it ate too much and had an upset stomach.i dont really know!thats about all the info i can remember>sorry
Hi,
Its not sneezing, matter of fact its seems to be barely breathing .as in a deep sleep(not wheezy ). It doesn't even respond to brushing its back. Though it seemed to be becoming quite tame yesterday, certainly not like this! I am almost sure its the cat food! She was moving around all of yesterday perfectly fine and last night, but then I dont know what happened last night still cant figure out what she might have ate or drank unless there was some disenfectant resign on the floor or something,)she shouldnt have been able to escape from the cage but she did!) I dont know I am baffled and devestated !

Hi.
Worse thing is I would have taken it to the vet if I could get there but the car has been broken for three weeks (still wating for the repairs!) and I am staying in a virtual ghost town (A holiday resort in France) Everything seems to go wrong at once! Just hope shes hibernating or sleep makes her recover , wish me luck and her good health.
Thanks again
P.S.
if its poison like disinfectant or something is there any home remedies to help?
