Encouraging dunnocks to use a bird table
12 Answers
How can I encourage the dunnocks in our garden to use our birdable? . Being ground feeders the stupid creatures spend all their time looking fruitlessly for food on the ground while the bird table is loaded with goodies. I don't like to put seed direct on the ground because of previous rat infestations.

Also I have an old BBQ in the garden which is barely two feet high. This spends its winter under the hazel tree which the dunnocks mooch around in. I put feed on this and they quite happily use this. I think that it is a combination of visibility, height and safety that encourages them.
Oooh, I'm shocked

Whoever, don't avoid putting bird food on the ground for the ground feeders because of rats. Rats will climb on to a bird table to feed, so they're probably helping themselves anyway!! Put something on the ground for the dunnocks and the blackbirds (cut up apples are always appreciated). BTW, my dunnocks use the bird table! K x
