How can I encourage the dunnocks in our garden to use our birdable? . Being ground feeders the stupid creatures spend all their time looking fruitlessly for food on the ground while the bird table is loaded with goodies. I don't like to put seed direct on the ground because of previous rat infestations.

You cant! However, I have a feeder fairly low down in a hazel tree which they quite happily use. Also I have an old BBQ in the garden which is barely two feet high. This spends its winter under the hazel tree which the dunnocks mooch around in. I put feed on this and they quite happily use this. I think that it is a combination of visibility, height and safety that encourages them.
Not stupid at all - that is where they find their food ..on the ground. They will find all they need from seed and other titbits that drop from your table feeder.

Their private life is amazing - real X certificate..!!!
Tell us more Cetti!!!
Not likely, Lottie - you're much too young ;-)
ooh, c'mon Cetti, I have dunnocks in the garden & I demand to know what they're doing...we have ways of making you squawk :o)
................ off with me binoculars to see what those Dunnocks are doing in the hedge!!!

I am so curious now!!!
Not even you will make me open my beak, Robby!!

OK, this is the most I dare mention.....swopping partners....three in a bed.....there's more, but it's a bit too graphic for here!!!

How very dare they!!!!
most are either polyandrous or polygynous = ooer missus!!
Oooh Burnhal, I'm certainly not either of those disgusting things. Certainly not!!! I'm polyunsaturated.

Tee hee Robinia!!
Whoever, don't avoid putting bird food on the ground for the ground feeders because of rats. Rats will climb on to a bird table to feed, so they're probably helping themselves anyway!! Put something on the ground for the dunnocks and the blackbirds (cut up apples are always appreciated). BTW, my dunnocks use the bird table! K x
