My dog has been eating her own poo for 10 years and the vet said she eats properly so she shouldn't be ....

When we got her, she was a puppy and was on a dog "farm" where she was locked in a shed with another dog and was barely fed. Could this be the reason ? Im not that bothered by it anymore but rahter creeped out ... lol :D

My dog does this too occassionally. She was kept in kennels by breeders before we got her. Someone told me that bitches who have pups do it to keep the 'nest' clean for their pups.

My sister got her dog from the same place and she is a nightmare for it - any time she gets the chance. Soooo gross!!!!!!
You could try adding a tinned pineapple ring to her daily feed, together with some of the juice. I have heard than 90% of the time it does work, but there are obviously exceptions to the rule.
Our 7 month pup is doing it we have tried all of the remedies ie pineapple, cabbage water, sweetcorn and deter tablets from the pet shop The vet says it could be because the food we give our dogs is such good quality its recycleable and because bitches clean up after their pups it could be genetic But when she is walked in the woods she walks away from it not interested but prefers rabbitt and horse droppings
The best thing is to pick it up before she gets a chance to eat it......distract her with a treat, if necessary, but don't make a big issue out of it, as it could then become a "prize".

The pineapple ring worked for one of my dogs - another trick is about an inch of grated courgette added to the main meal. But don't do it for every meal.

It doesn't do a dog any harm at all - obviously, as she's been eating it for 10 years! - as long as you worm her regularly.
I was told it's secondary nutrients and because of all the 'convenience food' (ie tinned meat and prepared biscuit meal) we give them, they're trying to get every last bit out of it. My dog used to do it, but I changed him onto the 'raw meaty bones' diet (gradually), so he only had fresh raw meat (scraps from the butchers, they give you them free because they only have to pay to have it disposed of) and marrow bones (no chicken or other small bones). He was 100% better for it (his skin and fur improved enormously) and he looked forward to every meal so much - and never ate his own poo again. And what could be more natural?

It didn't stop him trying to munch other poos if he came across themon a walk though, unfortunately.
This problem can be cured by picking up the poo immediately or using pineapple or all sorts of things but it's no good if your dog eats other dogs poo, I meet several dog owners who have this problem and it's very hard to stop the the dogs doing it, I once spoke to a vet about it and he said that if a vet could find an answer to it he would be a very rich vet!
Bitches only clear up after their puppies until they are put onto solid food, when the majority of them then say 'its over to you'.

If it hasn't done her any harm after ten years, I wouldn't worry, after all its only recycled food. Just make sure she is regularly wormed or else she will be reinfecting herself with them if she ever has them.

If you want to stop it then you must be there when she goes, and pick it up straight away, if the pineapple etc. doesn't work. I know some people who muzzle their dogs when out because they grab any lump of poo they can.

if it was my pupp i would food blend some chillis with water and put it into an old fairy liquid bottle. As soon as she poos just squirt it on the sh!t and let her eat away. If you keep this up i reackon it will soon end the problem. my new puppy started chewing a chair and i smothered it in chilli. she doesnt go anywhere near it. Its not brain science. Oh and if any of you think that the dogs welfare is put to risk by giving her a spicy mouth then u r plain SILLY.

Hope this helps

Wow ... I wasnt expecting any answers at all ! Thanks a lot !!!!

Definately gonna try the pineapple !!! Thanks !
You could try eating it yourself first. Hope this helps.
People around me are wondering why I am sniggering at a computer screen. It's because this is the funniest thing I have read today, thread of the week, without a doubt !
Can also recommend the tinned pineapple. Worked with my deaf mastiff 99% of the time. If you have more than one dog you will have to feed all of them pineapple as my mastiff wasn't fussy whose poo she ate. I also had success with a remote controlled collar which squited a lemony smell at her when she misbehaved. I had major behavourial problems with her as she'd been very badly treated before I got her and this was recommended by the dog psychologist ast Glasgow Uni. That's a bit too expensive is that's the only problem you have though. Good Luck
ha to the chili thing. we tried this on our first dog to stop him chewing furniture....he loved the chilli sauce, licked it all off, then chewed the furniture!!
