do flee collars actually work? i mean do they really dispel flees from the animal?

if so if you put a flee collar on a kitten from the start you can avoid an infestation altogether.........

then how does pest control make their money, surely a collar would be cheaper...

Please dont use a flea collar on your kitten!

You really shouldn't use them at all, I volunteered for the cats protection league and they had been told by the vet never to put a flea collar on the cats as they can have bad reactions to them.
Sure enough I went home and took them off of my cats and they had bald rings round their neck's where the collars had been.
After a good few years the hair still hasn't grown in.

No problem, I suppose you could wait until it's a bit older and then give it a trial run and see if it affects your cat.

I use a pill on my cats, it's used just the same way as worming tablets.
You could also use frontline, its come in a small dropper and you place a solution between the cats shoulder blades, I've ussed that too and it's very effective.

how does the dropper work? does it release a smell that the flees dont like? and i didnt mean tiny kitten.. for me a year old cat is a kitten. i love them so much. my babyeeesss

Haha I'm the same, I still call my three year old my kitten =]

It uses a substance called Fipronil, the simplest way I can describe it is that it stops stabilising hormones so in effect the fleas die from hyperstimulation.

I had normal collars on my cats but took them off 2 years ago. Blue is a black but has a few white hairs going round her neck in the shape of a ring. They were not there before so I think it was to do with the collars.

i would not recommend a collar of any sort for a cat. I have never had a fatality due to one. I had stopped using them since one of my cats kept coming home without his. I figured that he was getting it caught somewhere. Fortunately he had managed to slip out of it. I had another cat who was scratching and got his hind leg caught in the collar. He ripped his mouth aand my hands to shreds when I went to help him. I also have a friend who got home from work one day to find a note from her neighbour. When she went round he told her that he had found her cat dead. He had got his collar caught on the top of the fence. In the struggle to free himself, the collar had twisted round and round and he had strangled himself. It took her a long time to get over that. For ID I have got my cats microchipped. My vet only charges �10 for this. And for fleas I use Frontline. It works.

Forgot to tell you. You will get the Frontline 50% cheaper on the internet than from the vet. You do not need a prescription. I get mine from VET UK. You will find them if you google them. No charge for postage either.

just be aware of your cats weight when using frontline if you buy it from the net or a shop, my Molly cat is rather cuddley and the standard stuff from the shops weren't suitable due to her weight, I now get a droplet formula from the vet which covers cuddly cats like Molly.

I used to use flea collars for my dogs (back home) and they worked a treat.

Can I just give you a warning about frontline.For many cats it is not a problem but I have three cats and one of mine has an alergy to frontline.So please be careful when using this product, it can be dangerous for some cats.Just thought I would let you know.g.

Hi there I have two old cats and I thought one of them was dying he was very ill, anyway after coming on this site I was advised to stop giving him Frontline which I did. He slowly got better and now is fine and he is 18. The other cat still has Frontline and is fine with it.
