Worms. Didn't we just love em?

I realised last year that I hadn't registered seeing an earthworm in my garden for ages, years it seems. I used to curse them when they left casts all over my lawn but now I would welcome them back because I don't know what the blackbirds get these days for a tasty treat. Surely worms can't emigrate. Any ideas??

It may be that you've fertilized, treated for weeds or otherwise applied chemicals to your lawn that has depleted or destroyed the worm population. You can try buying earthworms from suppliers. At least here in the U.S., there are several companies that sell them.
Again, here, the only types of earthworms that leave ridges and castings on or near the surface are very large varieties that we call "Night Crawlers". These average 5 to 7 inches in length, whereas the garden variety (no pun intended) are only about 3 to maybe 4 inches in length. The small worms do not leave the ridges and castings. I'd order 100 worms per 10 square feet to start. I'd try to "seed' them after a good rain but when the soil has begun to dry. Do it in the evening to preclude bird predation overnight... gives 'em time to burrow...

Or you can buy a "wormery" from Wickes or B&Q etc.

Basically youcan put all your scraps of fruit and veg in their which is rather green, and the make compost and really fat worms.

You can use these to throw out for the blackbirds or if you have any fisherman friends (not the lozengers) they will love them for bait.

I used to work for an agricultural firm and farmers used to come in with various 'beaties' n stuff and our guys would identify them. This guy came in one day with a big worm in a jar, he thought it was one of those New Zealand Flat Worms that can attack a whole crop, I said "where did you find it" he goes "under a slab" lol I said "no wonder its flat" - the twit
