Why is it legal for people to let their cats wander and defecate on other peoples gardens? if dogs have to be on leads and their owners have to clean up the mess, why not cats?

I quite agree. I have 11 of the little poo machines & I went to considerable expense to build an escape proof fence around my large garden so as to not offend my neighbours & inflict my motley mob of feline tearaways on everyone around. I am responsible for what goes into their mouths & what comes out the other end gets cleaned up immediately by me (mmm lovely!!) I wonder if the laws concerning cats will change at some point...it might be a good thing.
Because unlike a dog you cannot keep a cat in all the time and becuse by law you have to have a dog license and either keep it contained (garden, house etc...) or on a leash with a cat you dont as they are wanderers.
cause cate are more thick but cuter
Absolutely brilliant question, sprogglin. When you try to attract a variety of birds into your garden, why should you have to put up with neighbours' cats spoiling all your efforts? I was in a hardware shop today and I was amazed at the variety of BB guns and air rifles available. I was sorely tempted. Pressure must be exercised to get controls on cats too although from my experiences of this site there would be a lot of opposition..
Cats are officially classed as vermin.
Don't get me started on this problem. Even using a super-squirter doesn't deter them.
Theres more to life than moaning bout this for gods sake!!
It would be interesting to see if thee has been a legal case where - for example - a cat woner has been sued because their cat defecated in a neighbour's garden where a child was playing and that child subsequently was infected with tapeworm or something. Burden of proof aside would it stand?
They haven't had dog licenses for years have they? Well if they have I've been breaking the law all this time. Owning lurchers seems to keep the cats away ;-)
our leash laws here in New Bern are for both cats and dogs, but they are not enforced, unless someone does call the city and complain about your cat, then they'll send an officer with a cage to be left overnight and get your tiger. course you'll have to go to the shelter and get him from there which will teach a lesson.

Thanks guys, i'll stop this here before i get the Kitty Brigade round to cat up my neighbourhood!
You don't need a dog licence any more.
Didn't a man get arrested for killing his neighbours cats? I think i read this in womans own a few years ago, they were most upset. Well, my neoghbours let thier cats inbreed and they are about 20 freak cats with missing legs/tails etc crawling around my garden, its kind of sick really..
