Today in our back garden we saw something odd.
I was an insect with a small brown furry body, long triangular brown wings at right angles to the body, similar to the shape of a humming bird moth wings, there was a strange spike thing sticking out of the front of its head and it was the size of an average bee.
There were two of them.
The pictures I looked at on the net of humming bird moths don't seem to match it. Any ideas.
Thanks for your time.

Hi tigerlily, what a surprise for you to have two little mysteries - now that's just plain greedy!

The only thing that comes close to your description is the Bee Hawk Moth. Trouble is they usually appear about May time, but anything is possible now, isn't it? Have a look at this picture and see if it resembles your little visitor in any way?

That looks really close to it but the wings didn't look transaprent to me, but that might be because I didn't want to get to close to it. That thing at the end of it's nose looked formidible. But there were two definatly.
We were both quite suprised to see the first one on the wall of the house sunning itself. Then I found another on one of the bushes by the fence.
Thanks for that. I'll show it to the other half and see what hes thinks.
Would it be possible to take a pic, or have they both now disappeared?

The other half took a picture with his phone camera but it isn't very clear. I haven't been in the garden today cos it's tipping down so I don't know if they are still there.
I haven't ever seen anything like them before.
Obviously I haven't been looking.
