Puppy classes..

Soo, speaking to a lady who lives a few doors down from me, and she runs a puppy class for half hour on a Thursday evening, so I re arranged my driving lesson and will be going this week!

Im wondering what happens at a puppy class? Is it mainly for getting puppies used to being around other dogs or mainly for training?
What should I take? Other then the puppy of course!

hi we took our pup to a pup class, but it is mainly for training,about 7,8 dogs in one class, the trainer told us what to do with the dog and prctise etc. we all have to hold the lead and cant let dogs sniffing around each other which im a bit disappointed, as my puppy is still not getting chance to socialise with other dogs.

Most puppy socialisation classes don't do formal training as such. They are mostly for letting the puppies play together and get to know other dogs. They are great for outgoing, boisterous puppies, but if you have one this is timid or frightened, or a tiny puppy that does not like hulking great brutes like Lab puppies, then it can do more harm than good. I would suggest you go along without your puppy and if there is anything you don't like the look of then don't take yours.

If it is a puppy training class, then the same applies, but you will be taught to teach your dog to walk on a lead, sit, lie down, stay and come when called. Well, thats the theory of it anyway.

Just in case you are doing some training take some tasty morsels with you. Our local class suggests little bits of cheese or chicken, and don't feed them too much tea due to the extra treats.

Don't forget to take a poop bag too...........

Lankeela, my puppy is the furthest from timid you can get! The vet said when we took her for her 2nd injection that its good she is so confident and lively, she just doesnt stop!

Even being faced with my other halfs sisters 1 year old St Bernard, she had no problems, and was in the end running round him in circles, literally! She was all over him and quite happily attaching her self to him, so in that respect, I dont think she will have any problems with a labrador pup, or a pup of any kind :)

I will go a long this week and take Cleo along, but if there is anything I dont like at all will easily be able to leave.

Although I doubt very much there will be anything I dislike, as my neighbour has been running the class a long while now, and she has met Cleo a couple of times and seen her with other dogs, and she wouldnt invite me to go along if she didnt think it would be good for her!

We played 'Pass the Puppy' at our socialisation parties. Great fun. I think the labs enjoyed it too!
