I inject as she is feeding because she is a flighty little madam and if she knows I have a syringe in my hand she clears off even though she is blind. I also give the injection site a little rub after injection. My vet wasn't too concerned about before or after food, he just said that if she doesn't eat up to 2 hours after the injection she would be OK because her appetite should kick in, just look out for signs of a hypo......never had one yet touch wood, I have found that a large hide chew is a good treat because it keeps her teeth clean. I buy them from Pets at home in a pack of two they look like rolled up paper also a little bit of carrot, apple melon or cucumber acts as a treat.
Piglet - I didn't mean for my answer to appear facetious! As far as I can understand, I think vets advise people to feed their dogs first and then inject the insulin afterwards is to ensure that the dog has actually had good meal first. I was told that if you inject the dog and then he doesn't eat - he can become poorly as there is no food for the insulin to work on.

anna linda,-many thanks for your advice my dog has sadly gone blind due to her diabetes and is becoming a little madam when it comes to injection time like you said i try to inject her when she is eating or more often than not after she has ate.then i give her a treat of gravy bone from tesco she loves them! i also buy the dentastix i have tried those rawhide treats but she only has some teeth and they bled so i dont buy them anymore.cheers again for your advise!
