what is the name of a yellow flower with big red spots on it grows in water. we think it is a type of orchid

Assuming you're in the UK, and you're talking of a plant growing wild: Sounds like monkey-flower. Try a Google image search on Mimulus guttatus. Not an orchid -- it's in the foxglove family.
Sorry, hasty answer. Monkeyflower is the one without red spots. I was thinking of blood-drops-emlets, Mimulus luteus -- just the same, but with the spots. I think they do hybridise, and certainly they vary in amount of red spots.
