I wanted to be a vet when I was little till I found out they only make about $35,000-$75,000/yr. seems a little small for about 8 years of schooling. I guess you really have to love animals. I do and everything, but some people treat their animals like crap and if I saw that I just hope my job would stop me from hurting them.
Don't have a clue but I do know somebody who's a vet and it strikes me she isn't loaded. I'm sure she makes a half decent salary but nothing like a doctor or dentist.
I am interested to find out why you ask?? I'm a vet and have just spent a solid 48hrs solid at work without sleeping. I spent all last night looking after a dog that was fitting. He is now ok - and the owners have disappeared refusing to pay, leaving a bill of over 600. That now has to come out of our own pockets. So no - we are not rich. I can think of plenty of other careers where I could earn four times as much money for half the hours.
ProperBoPeep: I dont doubt that the bill had to come out of your pocket. But, I always thought that the government paid for the bill if the owners left their animal there. What do you guys do when a person leaves their animal there? Hopefully not euthenize them. This is why I changed my mind about being a vet, I sure as hell would hurt someone if they abandoned their dog at the vets office.
Depends on whether or not you live near me cos one of my cats has had a tail amputated at a cost of 130 5 rys ago and just htis month I paid out another 96 for him to have an eye removed!! My vet says if all the cats he got were like Freddy he could get a Ferrari in a year rofl.
Christina 801 - in Britain, the government certainly don't pay if an animal is left behind. Neither do the animal charities as the dog officially has an "owner". If the animal is abandoned, we are obliged to look after them for a period of time, and then make efforts to rehome them. At our expense. Mrs Cheeks: Your 96 pounds has paid for the vets skill, a nurses skill, the anaesthetic equipment, drugs, wages, equipment, hospitalisation equipment as well as other overheads. Although it seems like 96 goes straight into profit - in actual fact only a very small proprortion of that will go into profit - and even this will probably be reinvested into the practice!
Hi BoPeep - I fully appreciate what the money paid for in the vets bills I had and was MORE than surprised at how much less it was than I was anticipating. I have a lot of friends who are vets and I say fair play to ANYONE who's vocation in life means sticking hands up cows bums rofl. It was my vet who made the quip about wanting more accident prone pets like mine to help him get his ferrari lol. xxx
Oh dear! I was about to launch a tirade as I thought that you meant veteran from "vet". As veterans are out of the military, they make all ranges of money, but the other answers indicate vet as in animal doctor. Oopsie! :)

Now I am getting worried. I just spent two years working my ass off to get to vet school secure in the knowledge that all of the heartache of my future career would be eased by a) my love of animals and b) a good bank balance. (I'm just being honest!) Now it's clear that I'm one down, and I'm not sure if I can stay in so stressful a job as a vet's is based purely on a love for animals. It's bad enough spending your life covered in cow manure but now I get to have no money also! Why didn't I just go to medical school - easier patients, better hours (yes, they do) and you can afford to buy a house, eat dinner and, all that good stuff.

I don't see how anyone can leave their bill and not pay it.  Vets put in so much time and effort to do the best for pets.  My chinchilla recently had to be taken to the vets for an emergency cesarian.  They had to charge me the same price as for a cat cesarian...235 pounds.  My chinchilla died about 28 hours later....i still payed the bill because i knew the vet did what he could.
