what size are you after? For larger mammals I would use sand- damp sand works best. For smaller mammals such as mice, voles and shrews you might like this- scro;; down til you find footprint tubes
Whoops! try scroll instead of scro;;!!
On the "One Show" just now, they were putting damp sand down, across a known animal run, to collect the footprints.

This question is for my son who hopes to show the kiddies what is around the garden at night. He has tried salt dough but it washes out in the rain. What do I scroll down?
Good old fashioned plaster of paris (without the bandages!lol.) will do the job. Or decorating filler, the powder sort made up really runny.
First you make a cardboard 'surround'. In other words a cardboard tube around the foot prints. Then make up plaster or filler to a easily pourable liquid, tap to remove bubbles before you pour. Fill card mould & wait until set. Lift plaster off the ground carefully when fully hardened & clean off and debris using a soft brush, removing the card surround. Show to kids!
You will know if the mix is liquid enough when you get full print impressions without air bubles.
I'd second that ^^^
sorry!!! sure I posted the link but try this for footprint tubes
