We have a Rhodesian Ridgeback 2 year old bitch and want to get another dog. We have opted for either a Leonberger or a Newfoundland. Are we better getting a dog puppy or a bitch?

I would always suggest getting a bitch puppy, if you are unsure about the two. Generally (and I repeat generally!), bitches are easier to handle than male pups, though taking on the responsibilty of a puppy of any type is a delight. However, one word of warning, which i'm sure you may have heard.....only take on a newfie if you have plenty of room, as they are not big dogs, they are huge!
I have always had two dogs for the past twenty five years or so, one of each and it's been fine. (Not the same 2 dogs!) Of course, we have neutered both. We find that dogs and bitches are so different in their temperaments that they tend to complement each other. Males are more upfront and boisterous whilst bitches can be more canny, but as ewand says their are both delightful!
