If you only break the shell it can not crawl into another but providing you have not damaged the snail itself it will repair/grow a new one over time just like with our nails. You'll be unlikely to break the shell without damaging the snail's body though.
While repairing the shell Mr/s Escargo needs to have access to a damp place to though, or else it will dry out. Snails are able to live in dryer habitat than slugs because they can retract into their shell and seal the end of to conserve moisture.
