It depends on its age, as it is really difficult to tell when they are kittens. Basically if he is a "whole" (unneutered) tom, it should be obvious. You'll see his testicles. Even at 4-6 weeks you should be able to feel (very very gently) 2 little peas under the skin. If your cat is older than 6 months, he may have been neutered, but look closely and you may see 2 very small remnants of the sac. Otherwise, it's probably a female. Some people comment that the female looks like the letter "i" from behind, with the split being the vagina and the dot the anus.
That's a good description already...but I'll add mine for good measure! If you lift up the cats tail & you can't really see anything there then it's probably a girl. If you see something but it's quite tidy & not particularly obvious, then it's probably a neutered boy. If you have a look and there's definitely quite a lot under it's tail, then you've got an entire tom ...he might smell a bit strongly too. I think you could go to any vet & a quick look by a nurse would confirm it for you..more than likely without a charge.
My vet told me that a "hole" is a boy and a "slash" is a girl. I've hand raised several litters and it seems pretty accurate! Good luck
