Poorly pup - sore back leg :o(
29 Answers
Oh dear, pup not 100% today, not bouncing around like tigger! He was fine this morn then, when my daughter came down before work, he got up from his bed and his back leg gave way - walking around on three legs.
We have had the hang dog expression, the its a dog life expression, the huge spaniel eyes - I feel sorry for myself expression! Oh dear! Have had cuddles all day - he is feeling very sorry for himself. Have taken him out for little trot round the garden every so often so leg doesn;t stiffen up.
Have sought advice - it seems he may have pulled a muscle, not life threatening - (just got to keep an eye on him - see how it is for next 24hours) - although gentle trot round garden does loosen the leg up a bit.
He hasn't even chased the neighbours cats out of the garden today!!!
He's my boy, love him to bits.
Ps - I think he is making the most of all the extra attention!!!! :o)

She goes mad when I get the lead out for walkies normally but she just looked at me. She walked a little way but her front leg was obviously sore. I ended up carrying her home!
I was really worried but the next day she was fine and walking as normal. I think she had pulled a muscle playing with a ball thats too big and heavy for her!

Thank you sally and leelapops - luv to pickles and jack!
Pup is curled up in tiny ball at the mo - huge ears covering eyes - oh dear!
He hasn't even wanted his dinner but has had good drink of water and managed to bribe him with bit of cheese! Think he will manage a bit of sausage later (another treat) just to keep his pecker up!!!
I guess it will be the duvet on the settee for me tonight (pup sleeps in my bedroom but don't think he will manage stairs yet). Im sure he will be back to his naughty lovely bouncy self in day or two.
Ps - he still manages a little wag of his tail - the more attention, the more the tail seems to wag!!!!

Alfie, can he put any weight on his leg? I was just thinking that because when I was a dog walker 3 of the dogs I took out had cruciate ligament problems and couldn't put any weight on their legs, this only happens with their back legs btw. 2 of the dogs were okay after some time resting but the other one a retriever had to have an op to repair the ligament, just a thought!
Don't wait too long to get this checked by the vet, it could be Legge-Perthe's disease which a lot of young small dogs get.
It is a deformity of the ball joint in the hip, rather like a small dogs version of hip displaysia. X-rays can show whether this is the problem, although the vet would probably give anti-inflammatories first in case it is just a strain.

Thank you for your answers. Oh dear - vet is on his case - but am hoping its just a one off - pulled muscle or something like that. Tonight and tomorrow will tell - if no improvement 2moro morn than back to the vets. Thank you for your advice - much appreciated. Will keep you informed. Am hoping he will be bouncing around 2moro and chasing the neighbours cats and getting into all sorts of trouble, thieving etc!!!! That's my boy!!! Fingers crossed.xxx
Thank you ruthann58. Pup was tempted by sausage and then had some doggie dinner too. Have been out in garden with him and he is trying to put some weight on the leg tho not much at the mo.
He's had so much TLC from my son and daughter and me!! I'm going to bring duvet down in a min and pup n' me are going to curl up together on the sofa! I will be watching the TV and pup will no doubt be sending up the zzzz's oblivious to everything!!!! xx

Hi sally and all - just an update on my boy.
Took him along to vets this morn - vet gave him thorough check - poor pup was quivering with fear, squealed when vet touched sore bit, but still he managed to wag his tail!!
Seems the problem is with his knee - either muscle or ligament - at the moment we are all going down the muscle route - so he has had injection and has tablets to take for next 5 days. Hopefully this wil suffice and cure cos otherwise its back to be vets for xrays, etc. Fingers crossed all will be well in few days. The injection does seem to have helped a bit and he is trying to put weight on his back leg again - albeit for a few mins.
He's such a loveable little pup - so good natured. I can't wait tho until he's back to his cheeky little self. He is now sending up the zzzzzz's - getting over his 'trauma' !!!!xxx

Lets hope this cures the problem. Try not to let him use the leg too much, as once the painkillers kick in, he won't be able to feel the pain. If it is a ligament or joint problem, exercise will make it worse. Try playing with him at home, games like hide the toy or find the titbit, to exercise his mind rather than his body.
Thank you lankeela and madboutcats - pup is very dozy at the mo - we are taking it very easy - just gentle trot round the garden - def no chasing puddy cats!!! No walkies for a while - i'm just keeping fingers crossed that this treatment works. You are right lankeela - the injection has really kicked in - taken away pain for the mo, and he is putting a bit of weight on that back leg - he has still got the hang dog expression but still manages a wag of the tail. Lots of cuddles and tlc!!! Gentle playing for next few days!! Hope his leg doesnt stiffen up too much tonight but will be sleeping downstairs with him again - hopefully tablets will help in next few days!!!
We (and the vet) just dont know how he injured his knee - he was fine and then got off his little bed yesterday morn to greet my daughter and wham - the knee went!
