I had a day off work (paid work, that is!) and I've had a lovely day here on the farm. We've had a duck pond dug and are now looking forward to our new arrivals - they've only just hatched, so it'll be a while yet. Loads of baby birds about now - a family of great tits and a family of blue tits (the little ones look so tatty!), all down on the feeding station and the siskins are still getting through a 2kg bag of niger seed a week (they must have loads of little ones, just waiting to fledge). The young swallows have fledged, too and are having flying lessons from mum & dad - it's lovely to see them all lined up on the telephone wires! My broody hen is still sitting tight on her 3 remaining eggs (they're due to hatch next weekend). Even though my 2 young cats are little devils, they haven't managed to catch any baby birds yet, thankfully, and I keep them in when I'm at work, so the birds get a bit of peace. The wildlife here is incredible - I even saw a red kite land in one of my fields today. K xxx
glad your back alfieblue and so pleased pup is up and running again . we have had a busy day doing all the little jobs that dont get done on work days cassie likes days like this as there is lots of pottering about for her to do she has to be in on everything i was trying to find the tortoise this evening to put him to bed every bush and plant i moved her head shot under so had to wait for her to look before i could .now she is snoring away beside me
Hi madboutcats, kleiber, ruthann58 and Lottie and all! Oh its so good to chat again!!
Kleiber - I am soooo jealous! Your farm sounds lovely with all the wildlife and the young cats and the duck pond ........ !that is so exciting. I have always wanted a duck pond from way back - just no room i'm afraid - mind you - don't know what pup would make of it - he just about copes with the goldfish pond!!! :o)
ruthann58 - your message made me giggle about cassie and the hunt for the tortoise!!! Cassie sounds just like pup - nosy, into everything, checking - doing their bit!!!! It takes me ages to do anything because of 'mum's little helper'!! Me and my shadow!!!! :o)
madboutcats and lottie - so lovely hearing from you - have a good week the both of u - hear from you soon. :o)
Ps - very damp here this morning - baby birds are looking a bit sorry for themselves - so is pup cos he knows he is going to have to wait a wee while for walkies (until the rain clears up a bit!!). The sky is looking a bit brighter tho so shouldn't be too long before we head off . Best wishes to all. :o)

Good to see you back and to hear about all the wildlife and other animal chat. It's one of my ambitions to go on a day out with hawks - the local Hawk conservancy does it so I'll have to talk to my son's nicely about my next birthday!
Quiet here - well lots happening and loads of baby birds but nothing exceptional. The magpies have 3 very noisy young and we have young sparrows, dunnocks, great tits and blue tits. I was late feeding them and got some very accusing looks through the window! The buzzards have been up and about too this week - haven't seen a lot of them recently but I'm looking forward to hearing them again.
Haven't seen the hedgehog but it's left its calling card on the grass so I know it's about. Apart from the rabbits digging up my garden nothing else to report.

Lovely to read your message - all very quiet here really - not much to report - tho havn't seen yellow beak today, didn't hear him singing (usually 4 am) and he hasn't appeared for his breakfast. Hope he's ok - will keep an eye out for him throughout the day. I miss that daft old bird when he's not around!!
Def go for the hawk day - its an amazing experience - the whole day is just wonderful - from beginning to end - can't say much more else I will go on and on (you know me - can't stop chatting)! - But, yes - go for it.:o)x

Hi bensmum
A Falconry/Hawk Experience day is not to be missed.
We had a most exciting time and learned so much about it. I hadn't realised that the weight of the bird was so important. They have to be a certain flying weight, sometimes it's as critical as an ounce. If they are too heavy they go into trees and can't fly back. In the wild they gorge and then sit around til they are the right weight to fly.
We learnt so much!!
Rainy here, Mr.yogasun has just found a dead shrew in the garden, no sign of injury.
See you again soon all xxxx

Oh leelapops - you have just brought back many happy memories for me!!
My kids when younger were members of YOC, (or similar)the same as you. I think if i recall rightly that their uncle enrolled them as members for birthday presents.
We used to get quarterly mags and had charts to fill in and birdies to look out for etc. Off we went at the weekends to see what we could see!!
My son, being the youngest could never quite use the bino's correctly and was usually looking out the wrong end! Bless!!!
However, the kids are now big kids but they have never lost their interest in nature and all it has to offer.
Happy days :o) :o) xxxx
