Sorry, but how the devil has your dog got maggots???? Where???
Question Author
She is mostly an outdoor dog until a few days ago I do not know how it happened. They are awful things and she is going to vet as I write.
where has she got them????
I took in a rescued Rough Collie once, and he had a bite under his coat which had not been treated. When I cut the coat away to clean the wound, which was a couple of days old by the time I got him, it was crawling with maggots. The vet washed out the wound with some antiseptic lotion, but we had to pick a lot out with tweezers. When my friends dog got bitten by a snake, the vet said they had to keep the wound very clean as any infestation of flies which lay eggs which turn to maggots could mean the dog losing his leg if they could not clear up the infestation.

Rabbits often get maggot infestations if they are not cleaned regularly, particularly round their rear end. Sheep also get it.

If the vet finds a would on your dog he will probably give you some liquid to bath her in and some antibiotics to clear up any infection.
Yes, lankeela - I've had experience of fly strike in both rabbits and sheep, and it's a horrible thing. I must admit, though, I've never heard of it in a dog (apart from strays that, as you said, have perhaps had a wound that's been left untreated). Clohesgram, you say she's an outdoor dog, so maybe she's been hurt in a fight or caught herself on some wire or something? Poor baby - I guess you've had a report from the vet by now - how is she?
Hi
I work on a farm and occasionally we get sheep with maggots, a very cheap solution is to use Jeyes Fluid in water and the maggots just rise to the surface and fall off.
It is almost odourless nowadays compared with a few years ago, it is available at most garden centres ironmongers etc
If the maggots are in an open would I would not use Jeyes Fluid, as it has a corrosive effect. Well diluted, it could be ok if the maggots are just in the fur. (Hate the smell by the way, I worked at Jeyes for two years, and Monday was the day they made the Jeyes Fluid solution in the factory. You came home with the smell of it in your nose and throat and on your clothes.)
I use a weak solution of Jeyes fluid on the sheep and it works fine. You have to be careful, though - too little & you don't kill the maggots & too much & you kill the sheep!! (So far, haven't killed any sheep!). I also use it in solution to clean the chicken runs. How is your dog, clohesgram? Please let us know.
