Crying Birman cat

Hi, I have a very much loved 8 year old Birman cat who is driving me bonkers crying all the time. She particularly does this at night and in the early morning when she often wakes me up at 3, 4, 5 and 6 o'clock which at least has the virtue of being when I am supposed to get up! In the evening she will just wander upstairs and start crying for no reason. She is a very needy cat but does not tend to sit on my lap and relax very much. When I have an afternoon nap seems to be the only time she is really happy as she curls up in the gap next to my pillow and purrs like mad as I pet her before as I drop off. She is also becoming rather thin and scraggy looking although she has a very rich diet of kitten food as she has always been prone to thiness. I am taking her to the vet to check her out health wise but I think this is emotional not health really I am just so worried about her. Any suggestions or similar experiences?

Has she been spayed? 'queens' will always make a huge amount of noise when in season, I also found that mine was always very skinny until she had her operation then she filled out nicely.. definately take her to the vets though, hope she's alright!

does she have access to a cat flap so she can go out at will?

It sounds as if she is 'calling for a mate'!

Hi. My best friend had a Birman who lived to be about 19 years old and has recently passed away. An eight year old cat should NOT be fed on kitten food, so you had best stop that! It is way too high in protein for her so a food for a senior cat would be more appropriate. If she is thin, it could be a sign or worms or something else, so you are very right in taking her to a vet for a thorough check up and they will be able to advise you better on nutrition for her. She is obviously telling you that something is not right, or is just a very needful cat. Good luck and hope you get her sorted out!

You should take her to the vet for a thorough check - thinness can be a sign of thyroid problems among others and they do seem to get vocal with this. She may also have hearing problems.
My old cat yells at me at all times of the night and day - it's like she's been wound up and can't stop at times. She has thyroid trouble which she has medication for and is also deaf which doesn't help but we have ascertained that there are no other underlying health problems so I think it's just the way she is!
