kids and animals

at what age do childeren appreciate life? I read a thread the other week about some kids taking a hedgehog and set fire to it. Just imagine what it fealt? It was going down the road looking for some food and suddenly some humans pick you up and you here lighters scratching and laughing. Then you see a lot of light and then pain. Then some nice person comes and saves you but its too late your body is burnt and going into shock. you are concious the who;e time and dont know why somebody would do thisd too you. until your heart gives in and you die. The hedgehog must have been in pain for a long time as it was still screaming when the police arrived. Would this have happened when we were young?
