I expect that at 16 years old bathing your cat would be a bit of a shock for him! Also it's generally easier said than done unless kitty has been used to being bathed regularly. A dry shampoo or grooming powder would be worth a try but make sure you use one formulated for cats since kitty will probably end up licking some of it off his coat. You might get the vet to check his teeth next time you're there in case he's stopped grooming due to discomfort in his mouth. Also you might consider either feeding a diet formulated to improve the coat or add a few drops of oil to his food each day.
You may be best to try a spray in detangler that also acts to stop it from tangling in future by coating the hair. There are lots available

Cowboy Magic (originally used on horses, but now used on dogs and safe for even humans) is excellent. Top product on attached link.

I was also going to suggest a detangling conditioner safe to use on cats.

It they object to being sprayed then spray it on the brush and brush it through their hair that way.
If the matting is particularly bad-and located in a difficult to reach spot, ie the tummy...some vets will shave the area. I had that done to a long haired moggy I had.....she was a bit shocking looking-lol..but much more comfortable, and able to groom again.
Hi.....all of the above....plus our Ragdoll got some matted bits and a friend told me to get cone of these....

Best 10 I ever spent, it's easy to use and a lot less shocking for the cat than a trip to the vet!
