Mares in season - Gelding excited
3 Answers
How long does a mare's season last and why does a gelding (10 years since the op as a yearling) try to mount her?
She is new to the group and very keen that he should - sadly, he is only 11 hands and she is 16.2, so not much chance!
Should I try to stop this and if so, how. Are there supplements to stop oestrus for example?
I had a different mare running with 3 geldings for over 10 years and never seen this behaviour before.
Thanks.

I once had a mare like that. She was a naughty baggage who wouldback the poor gelding into a corner and present herself to him. Poor boy would get quite distraught as Im sure he knew those days were over. She didnt do it to any of the other geldings just the one. I ended up having to seperate them for that period.
