Please answer fast buying dog now!!!

Hello
I am buying a 2 and a half year old dogue de bordeaux this evening off an owner who seems genuine.
Only one problem due to me buying the dog for a cheaper than most price (due to the owner requesting a good family home and not to bothered about price) they are refusing to hand over the papers with the dog....they say they will gladly show me the papers but won't give them to me as they want their bitch to have a forever home and not to be bred.
This doesn't bother me as I too do not want to breed her but my partner is worried and doesn't think we should go ahead with the sale, as he thinks that by the owner holding onto these documents they still have legal ownership of the dog....what would anyone suggest I do? please be quick....thanks xx

A dog of this size will be extremely expensive to treat ... and I speak from experience as I own an Irish Wolfhound that has just cost 6,000 to mend, most of which went on antibiotics, general anesthetics and painkillers! The drugs needed for a dog this size cost so much more than for a smaller dog. Try to establish that the dog has no history of medical problems because when you come to insure it most companies will not cover existing conditions, and you might find yourself landed with huge bills
Hi all thanks for your MANY answers, much appreciated. We bought the bitch last night, and she's a big softy, I know it's only early days however so I'm watching always! As far as I'm concerned with having my daughter around a dog is always on trial....the first time they turn nasty or bite for no apparent reason that's the moment I am rid of them, I love animals and am already really loving with my new bitch, but I will always see to the safety of others around her.
We did see the papers, but they would not leave them with us.
She is quite stumped for a DDB, this 'apparently' is due to a breeder breeding her on her first season which the owners claimed to be some other owner when she was 6 months old, and when she had the pups most of them died due to her being to young and the breeder who had her at the time no longer saw a need for her.
So she has supposedly resided with the next family (previous owners) until now, at 2 and a half yrs old.
she seems to have bursts of energy at times and gets excited, wags her tail and wants to be stroked, but mostly she likes to sleep. This dog is however very much overweight, her belly hangs quite low and her nipples look quite 'stretched' (sorry to have to describe like this but it's the only way I can think to give you a picture of her)
Her previous owners said they did in fact walk her regularly but fed her 3 giant bowls of food each day and whatever else she'd basically eat....she stunk very bad, her fur smelt horrible so the first thing we did after buying her was to bath her.
She still has the smell slightly but I'm looking to buy dog deodorisers etc to keep her smelling fresh and keep my home liveable! ;-)
Any idea what my next steps should be from here? should I get her insured before first vet visits, should I be contacting anyone to let them know the dog's now mine.
I got them to sign the document however that now states that she now

Don't know if this would be of any help to you but there is a molosser breeds forum here:
http://z11.invisionfree.com/molosserbreedspart 2/index.php?act=idx
There are lots of owners/breeders of DDB on there and I am sure you could get lots of useful tips from them, a lot of them rescue dogs too, so they have experience.
You have to join and do an introduction piece before you can see the full forums, this is just to stop spammers etc.
Hope things work out for you.
Do you have any previous experience of the breed?

If her teats are droopy then it sounds like she has had more than one litter and probably recently. If you give her registered name I will check to see if any puppies have been registered from her. Of course she could have had an unregistered litter, or even a crossbreed litter.
Definitely get her vet checked, having puppies even at a young age would not make her 'stumpy'.
Bring her back to fitness gradually, they are big dogs and even at her age she will not be fully mature.

Glad you're happy with your new DDB. Get her insured before you go to the vets. Tesco are good (although getting more expensive). If you go to the vets first and there's a problem you won't be covered. There speaks the voice of experience! All mastiffs are great sleepers so don't worry about that. I had a Neo who smelled bad when she was rescued. Turned out she had mites but I expect your bitch just needed some TLC. Good luck with her
Sorry loza but it all sounds definately suss to me.
I'm glad you have taken this poor dog into your home and from the looks of things already into your hearts however methinks that there is more to this dog's history than meets the eye.
I'm still curious as to why the previous owners would not part with her 'papers' and wonder if perhaps there have been more than one bitch sold on the information they contain.
Still, whatever the reason for her sale and your reason for buying I wish you all well with the newest member of the family.

Hello all
Sorry regarding late reply not managed to get online for a few days. Ok im going to answer you all one by one....
redcrx - apparently she has been microchipped, but the owner said they can't remember the number!! Dont know what all thats about.
dot.hawkes - I dont know that they were definately her papers but that doesn't bother me anyway to be honest, I've found a brilliant dog for a fraction of the cost and we love her, she's really come out of her shell these past days and when she sees us gets really excited (when shes not sleeping ;-) .) I will be having her checked over this wednesday at our local vets.
Kita1 - Thankyou for the website, I'll be sure to sign up soon. Yes my partner has previous experience of DDB's but I have experience with staffys and labradors.
lankeela - I never got her registered name - whoooops. I still have the prev owners contact details (email) what reason could I give in wanting this inofrmation??
no.knowledge - Yes I would buy a sherbert fountain without the liquorice - one because I dont like liquorice and 2ndly because I love sherbert.....same scenario...Dont like Dog breeding....but I defo love my dog x
thugulike - Good Job you told me I will get her insured as soon as Im finished here....she has a vet appointment wednesday feww! ha thanks x

woofgang - Yes she probably is a reject to her previous owners...but not to me she is sheer beauty
Loftylottie - The previous owner also has 3 more DDB and a Boxer pup!! Unfortunately dont know the address otherwise I would send RSPCA around for a check.
Twaflooers - The owners did say they'd sold another bitch last year and they too have a bitch living with them now of the same breed...maybe they are using them same papers for all dogs they sell....we'll see when I take her to the vets as they'll know her exact age. Im even more curious as to why they didnt part with papers now... as their reason was because they were selling her so cheap and didnt want her to be bred or sold on for a larger cost ......but in fact she has been spayed! x
Thanks for all your answers...looking forward to your replies. x
