cat miaowing

why does my cat go upstairs and wander round crying 'miaow, miaow, miaow' constantly? he sounds upset to me, but i cant for the life of me think why he would be. if i call him he will run down and chirp at me and he seems fine.

How old is your cat? If he's getting on a bit then he does it for reassurance to make sure that you know where he is. One of mine miaows before she goes upstairs because she wants me to see her go up.

yeah, hes getting on a bit. hes about 14 now, but still young at heart bless him. so calling out to him is probably a good thing then, ahhhh im feeling all maternal over him now!

Maybe he's having an I want my mum moment.

Mine is quiet independant and not a fussy cat as such but when I go outside for a cigarette he sits the other side of the door with his big eyes looking up at me and miaowing.

He just wants you to know where he is
My first cat did this in the middle of the night. Apparantly they wake up and get confused where they are so it's a call for mum!
I ended up ignoring the middle of the night miaws...I had to got to work the next day but she could sleep all day!

I took a course in Cat and, like the others, agree that he is telling you where he is (why is another matter altogether and I hope to do that in the Advanced Cat Psychology course next year). I doubt if he really is upset, that's more of a miaowwww sound, slightly higher pitched and often ends on a high note...

My cat Tansy is 21 yrs old, and she does exactly the same, wanders off upstairs, and miaows until I call her. I think perhaps as she's got older, she sets off where she wants to go, and then gets a bit confused as to where I am. In the last year, she even wanders off into the kitchen when I'm in the living room, and does the miaowing there, either until I call her, or I go to look where she is. As you say your cat is about 14 yrs, which vets consider to be quite elderly, I wonder if the cats (yours and mine), feel the need for reassurance that we are not far away. my parents cat started singing up their stairs in the early hours of the morning when he was about the same age. there was no rhyme or reason to it, but the noise was absolutely unholy...if i stayed over, it frightened the bejesus out of me! it carried on until he died about three years later and it drove my parents spare. i hope that you get a bit more peace and quiet x

Mine's quiet young, only 2, and doesn't miaow too much (only when I'm outside having a cig as he sits behind the door waiting for me), think the neighbours must think I'm mad as I pull faces at him through the door and talk to him through the letterbox!

He has more a proper tomboy yowl (or growl when he has a treat cornered haha).

He's not one for constant attention or fuss but knows he can get it whenever he wants it.

He goes from Mr Independant most of the time to Mr Needy at night, cuddles up to me and does his pawsys and suckling thing, purring away.

Its a sign of dementia in elderly cats and very common.

Please take him to the vets, who can help.
