Dog Allergic To Dust Mites Help Please
4 Answers
My dog is allergic to dust and American storage mites. The latter is not an issue if biscuit products are avoided; however the dust mite allergy is a real problem.
He is on Atopica to try and reduce the effect of the allergy and I give him Piriton. When it gets really bad I give him a 2-3 week course of steroids. I don't like him being on steroids because of the damage they do long term, but they do work.
I have mostly wood flooring now so it's easy to clean, have all sorts of stuff in the house for the allergy like the right hover, bedding etc etc. I have a machine that's supposed to pull the dust mites out of the air. All this and he still has problems with itching. Obviously we are a regular at the vets and they have really done all that they can. We manage the situation together. Has anyone found anything else that can help with a dust allergy?
I also try and keep the house as cool as possible to try and stop the mites from breeding.

From experience have noticed dogs living in centrally heated environment get the itches whereas dogs living without CH but with access to shelter do not suffer same.
The CH dries the skin and natural oils disperse. Keep the dog as cool as possible. Bedding should be microwaved for 1minute to kill parasites.
