Why do birds still cuddle together behind chimney stacks, when most houses these days don't have open fires? It was understandable when the chimneys were warm. Is is something that is still being passed down from parent birds to their young?

The wood pigeons that land on my mums roof like to scare her by cooing very loudly down the old chimney pot making her think theres a bird stuck, so maybe they do it for fun, enjoy scaring the occupants................Laughter aside maybe the chimney pots offer them some shelter from the cold winds and cuddling together offers warmth as well.
