Can cats purr while they are asleep

My seems to be able to ...or is he bluffing ?

I'm not sure but my cat purrs at the vet but our vet is very attractive :-)
I read somewhere that they purr when in pain or distressed. I think it said that it's thought that they do it to try and comfort themselves and calm themselves down. Would make sense for the vet visit but not sure about when they are asleep. One of my cat's used to snore very loudly but that's about it.
I thought cats purred when happy and content?
I didn't realise either until I found the link in my new thread above.

Seems they can purr when in pain or, for lady cats, when it labour.

Really interesting site.

If you know your cat you can tell the happy purr from the
not happy purr.
