Very sad!

P'raps the authorities should bring back the dog license & charge a hefty price for it - annually.

That may make people think long & hard before acquiring dogs, then hopefully, this kind of thing wouldn't happen.

A dog isn't just for Christmas.......
Hi Lottie. Horible, isn't it, but there are a lot of callous folk around. Makes you wonder how they'd treat a child.
I agree with smudge. Having to fork out a hefty amount for a dog licence might sort out the true animals lovers from those who aren't, but there'd still be people buying from unscrupulous breeders, or who'd sell pups off cheaply - just to get dumped in this awful way.
Mind you, from what we've seen & the way some of the travellers treat their dogs, it doesn't really surprise me!
Oh :(

I hate to hear about this type of thing too. I have had to stop watching Animal Cops because I was getting too distrssed.

I would pay for a licence too.
There are some truly wicked people in this world. Thank God there are some kind folk too.

How the people responsible for this can sleep in their bed at night, I'll never know.
We've got four dogs, and I'd happily shell out for licences if I thought it'd stop this sort of thing. Sadly, I don't think it would, completely, and it'd penalise old folk who rely on their pets for company but perhaps couldn't afford a stiff licence fee. I think anyone caught being cruel to animals should be given a long prison sentence, but the trouble is, when the poor things are just abandoned, it's probably done at night when no one's around.
Of course there will always be a certain kind of person who would buck the system & refuse to pay for a license, it's just same with TV's!

There are lots of good law abiding caring people & those that aren't. I think some might refer to them as chavs!

Such a shame for the pets!
I think people who own dogs for the blind, or some pensioners, should either be exempt, or charged a minimal fee for a license.
What I find so very worrying is the fact that the dogs are so afraid of human contact. It makes you wonder just HOW badly the animals have been treated.
Good idea - particularly for the blind, because they often rely on their dogs for all sorts of things, not just for when they go out.
I don't know how anyone could deliberately hurt or simply leave an animal to die. It's horrible, but perhaps some of it's due to the fact that that the parents of these people never taught their children how to respect life, full stop.
Had to smile at the "chav" bit though. : )
Oh pasta! Our daughter & partner bought a three year old retired greyhound a couple of months back & the look in her big brown sad puppy dog eyes, made me cry so much when I met her.

She had been mistreated during & after retiring from racing. She is the most docile dog you could ever wish to meet & after weeks of love & attention, feels much more relaxed & secure now.
I bet she turns out to be a lovely dog, smudge. Our first dog came to us after being horribly ill-treated as well. We didn't hold out much hope, being as though he's a Staffie, but he's a beautiful, faithful dog, and wouldn't harm a fly. if you treat them well, they reward you so much.
Hi Ice - I know it's awful. We often see chav's in the town tugging along their mascots! Some of these people really don't deserve to own children let alone a dog - the way they bellow to them!
Ah Ice, poor staffie. I'm glad he's settled down now & giving you lots of pleasure!

Sally (the name she came with), is proving to be a wonderful companion. Our daughter was showing me a video of her racing around the park the other day - she really goes for it & has made lots of little friends along the way! She lets everyone know she's free at last, bless her!

It's nice to see such caring people here. I would gladly pay for a dog licence for both of my dogs, even if it were quite hefty. It should definitely be brought back. A reduced rate for pensioners would be good (especially as I am one!) and of course dogs who help the blind, deaf and disabled should be exempt.

It seems all the worse for being so close to home for me!

Poor little souls.
I really don't think a dog license would help it would only be the responsible owners who would buy one, and you imagine all the chav families who own a few staffies buying one, they would, if caught, say they had found the dogs and that they didn't belong to them, the dogs would be taken into rescue then they'd go out and get another one.I really don't know what can be done about this problem but I know what I'd like to do to these cruel b******* !
Hello Lottie, and everyone.

It is truly sad to see this kind of story, and the saddest thing is that it happens time and time again. It breaks my heart each time I see a story like this and I feel so powerless.
I have mixed feelings about the potential of a dog licence: I, like most people here, would happily pay for one, but then I am the kind of person who picks up after my dog, feeds him well, walks him plenty, gives him lots of love and would NEVER EVER mistreat him.

A licence only holds weight with people who respect the law and humanity.

May all our animals live in peace this Christmas and in 2009.

docspock...I agree....I have more empathy with animals than I do with humans. Why are you surprised at this story, when man's inhumanity to man is so profound....Aushwitz, Buchenwald, Pol Pot, Baby P and how about the Spanish Inquisition in persuading one to believe in Christ?
I agree too doc - when you see how some dogs, who are total strangers to each other, react when meeting in the park, compared to some humans who accidentally bump into each other in the supermarket & one is given tthe angry 'look'.....
