How old is your cat and has it recently started doing this?
Well it was just Christmas, I tend to drink a bit more this time of the year too.

Is it losing weight and eating more? Or having problems having a wee? How old is it? Drinking more can be a sign of certain problems so it would be worth getting a vet to look at it.
Does it 'hang' over the water bowl for ages as well ...?
Maybe it's Diabetic or have you changed it's feed to a saltier version?
definitely take it to the vet - could be kydney problem, diabetis or an infection. Maybe nothing, but if you leave it too long and it is something serious things may not go well.
As above, could be diabetes or kidneys.

My mum's cat started drinking a lot and ended up in an awful state as he had both.

Get them to a vet and get them checked out as early as possible so anything can be picked up on and treated accordingly.
cats normally drink a lot of water if they are feed dry food only. if the cat is drinking excessively it may be due to hyperthyroidism, renal failure, diabetes.
you need to get the cat to a vet asap for blood tests.
