A friend recently told me that dolphins are the only other animals (besides himans) that mate for fun. Is this a true fact or just another piece of barroom rubbish?

believe it or not i heard sea horses where the only other animal apart from humans. i'm not 100% sure on this though
Rubbish!

ALL Animals have sex for fun. The only other explanation for animals having sex is that they somehow have a sense of duty to produce young to continue the species, and put themselves through the ordeal of sex in order to do so. This explanation is nonsense, because no animal could possibly have the intelligence, perception or foresight to understand that sex is the thing which leads to pregnancy or which makes babies, months into the future. Animals have just as much fun having sex as humans do, and the ones which don't became extinct hundreds of millions of years ago.
P.S. Quite apart from the obvious logic of my brilliant answer above, several animals have been observed having sex for fun rather than for procreation. Bonobos have sex all the time, everybody with everybody, regardless of gender or age. And many species of animals have been observed having gay sex.

Thanks for your answer bernado, though I did think that with all other animals it was instinct not pleasure that drove them, i cant be too sure on this matter, hense i posted the question in this section, one in which i rarly if ever visit in order to answer questions. In all I think this is an exellent site which provides answers to all, together lets keep up the good work!!!!! yours Dinsdale
well yes, but whether its for fun or for other reasons is debatable. In Bonobos, sex is apparently part of the socialisation and group bonding process, it also establishes precedence without fighting by identifying who can initiate and who has to submit
I had heard that it was only Humans and Dolphins too, but im not sure how people can be 100% sure what animals' intentions are.. =)
I want to know how they know that they only bonk for pleasure??? What kind of job is that to have? rofl
