More dogs are put down because of problems due to lack of socialisation than ever die from catching anything, so provided you take obvious precautions (like not taking it to the local park) then I would say take the pup out and about with you, carrying it where there are any other dogs but letting it down if you can find a field or open area.

The more it learns now the easier it will be, get lots of people to make a fuss of it and get it used to the car. Use titbits to get its attention nd reward it if it comes to you and make it sit for its food, by lifting the bowl up above its head its bum will go down and you can tell it sit. Take it out for a wee every time it wakes up, eats, or has been playing for about fifteen minutes, stay out with it till its been, and the do the loopy dance when it does a wee or a poo outside, telling it what a clever baby it has been. Loads of praise and make it fun, and you will find it is keen to please and will soon learn to ask to go out.
we have a 7 month old cocker and at training classes they advise you to try and not use treats, that your voice should be enough. that said i found it helpful when she was tiny for getting her to sit etc.
lots of praise when she does something you want her to do.
dont use fexi leads or harnesses
we found a crate the best thing ever
good luck and have fun!
hi missy?
hiya, i dont know if iam the one missrandom you mean, i havent been on for ages and i did notice there was another missrandom, but with a capital R, lol
Firm but kind discipline from the start.

It's so easy to let them get away with all sorts as they are so cute and loveable but the more you let them get away with at the staert the more trouble you may have later.

You could also watch the Dog Whisperer (or something like that) with Cesar Millan.

I agree with Lankeela about taking the pup out and about. Presumably the mum of the pup was going out for her normal walks, therefore she would have carried germs back into her pups (on her feet etc.).

Try and find out what really switches the pup on (treats, toy etc) call it to you and reward it every time it comes, with a treat or a toy - even in the house - that will make recall so much easier when you are out.

Remember take alot of photo's now - they don't stay that cute for long!!!!!!
I hardly ever watch Cesar Milan, but saw it briefly the other night just as he tried to take a hosepipe off a bulldog which proceeded to bite him on the hand and made it bleed. He tried to play it down by saying it was only a scratch. What a tw*t. This sort of programme is extremely dangerous because it makes people think he 'cures' these dogs in a few minutes and that they can do the same. How long before he is sued because someone tried one of his daft methods?
If I put what I think of Cesar my whole answer would be stars!!!

Besides which he does not use pups, the majority of his work is with 'rescue' or problem dogs - and it doesn't work then!!!

the problem with taking them out , i believe, is not coming into contact with germs but coming into contact with unvacinated dogs.
also watch out if your in a lung worm area, but your vet should advise you if you are.

thank you all for ur advice i can't wait to get my pup we're gonna call it Brian lol have got everything ready now it's really exciting lol
aah, it is exciting isnt. love the name too.
I was really disappointed to learn that after my puppy had her vaccines, she still couldnt go out for another 2 weeks!! we were allowed to take her out to other peoples houses etc as long as there weren't any unvaccinated dogs, she loved that.
also we (and a lot of others we know), didnt bother to paper train, we just trained her to go outdoors from the off.
if you dont know me ur deffo not the same missrandom

no probs

take care either way
